the trans-shaping of clothes (to fit our changing times)
The world is in flux and culture responds with fragments of ideas, sketches of innovative forms and creative utopian concepts. We are looking forward to ambiguous and rather unfathomable times, tasting moments of promises, and experiencing instants of doubt, knowing that much is wrong in a society witnessing the decline of its institutions. We are living a bipolar moment where we can go from a jubilant personal experience to dismal public aggression, from an absolute high when encountering the outdoors to a depressing down living in the outskirts of gentrified cities, a transversal construction of time and space. We may eat healthy with tremendous taste but fall into fast foods as easily, just like we are able to dress beautifully one day and then neglect ourselves the next. Progress and innovation slaughter jobs yet create capital; sustainability counts yet stifles the eternity of beauty; prescription drugs boost the economy but execute our idols and many young people; overconsumption kills resources; the food industries engender obesity; smart tools jeopardize sexuality and intimacy – all in all, a zombie scenario of sorts.
It is hard to know who we are and where we are going. Questions of gender are motivating change in a transgender society where all humans accept and covet the genes of the other. People are in a blurred mood experiencing a fuzzy sense of logic.
We are faced with a growing number of global problems to solve and at the same time are confronted with local solutions and regional resolutions to make our lives better, creating optimism and streaming survivalist energy.
Our lifestyles reflect these schizophrenic times with hesitant ideas and woolly perceptions; we are in constant transition from one world to another, from one reality to the next, from one meaning to manifold feelings. We live in the selvage of time, hovering at the edge, scared to plummet, but curious nevertheless. Troubling times at best.
As always textiles and clothes react with precise imprecise design directions, blurring borders, obscuring codes, transforming patterns and transfiguring shapes. Amazing creative forces are unleashed and will help change happen more rapidly than expected. It is as if fashion starts waking up from its long self-induced sleep and, although still sleepwalking, is wandering into newer and more audacious, abstract realms of realization.
The designing of clothes will become a true faith, the production of basics a real cult, the creation of textiles a real provocation. The trans-disciplinary forces at play in society will transgender a host of hybrid ideas that hover between one domain and another, one category and the next, one period and its reverse, one country and its opposite. The winds of change are gathering forces to become a gale, able to flood all current standards, to blow away all preconceived ideas, to reverse the way we do things, emancipating the future with transonic magnitude.
Let’s therefore open up our transient selves to change, becoming transformable beings and transposing the rules to create ingenious pandemonium.
